the writers studio

where writers can get low cost demo quality tracks

genesis of the idea

I walked into the studio early for a session. The steel and strings player was lugging his stuff in  for the session. It was hot outside and cold inside so his instruments had to cool down then he tuned for what seemed forever. then the fiddle& mandolin. We're all ready but the guitar player is not there yet. The phone rings , hello ."Yo man I'm stuck in a big traffic jam but I'm going as fast as I can". One hour later he waddles in . tunes up and we start. The steel guy is mad because he had to waste an hour. The producer is mad that this is the third traffic jam in two weeks. The truth is that whole session was wasted for everyone involved. That day I decided to put all my efforts into my own writers studio

two problems confront me as a song writer and musician

1: production costs

I would show up to the studio with 10 songs and a pocket full of money and leave with 10 tracks of whatever the best they had day and empty pockets.

I'm mostly a gospel writer with a limited market. The cost to produce the music for my songs took most of the fun out of my writing. Every time I write a new song I can feel my wallet getting thinner and thinner. So I tried to produce the music myself. some parts are good but others are let's say poor. lets face it

2: limitations of the studio. The same 4 musicians are the same on every song. I want more variety of styles but don't want to have to locate good studios in each style.

how it works

We start with a midi scratch track created by a producer (often times the writer or me) , then add rough vocals. This is exported to mono mp3( to keep the file small)

optional

The mp3, or midi scratch track is sent via email to a

second producer who suggest chord and style changes  to the song.( I have found this to be a valuable step, I like to use a  guitar player experienced in the musical style of my song. They can have great insight into the commercial aspect of the style )

recording begins

The mono mp3 is sent to a rhythm player  (usually guitar in my style of music ) The mp3 is placed in a multi track recording program . Then  record  a rhythm track and export the single track of what you played( not the mp3 track you imported, just your playing) to mp3 ( at highest quality compression) then email mp3 back to the producer . This should be actually going on final mix so it needs to bee as good as possible. The producer will mix back into original recording then we repeat this with each instrument we want in our song

solo licks

solo licks are added in the same way .

just record and export your licks mono mp3 and email back

 single track recording

basically this is single track layover recording taken to the extreme . using the power of the internet to keep us from driving to each others studios. Harnessing the expertise of each others home studio. We will loose some benefits of being in a room together with that live band dynamic. But we will gain tremendous savings in production cost. have access to any musician in the world with an internet connection. We are able to work on our music,  on our own time, not pressured by the tic toc of the studio time clock  charging you by the hour.. I like to work on projects late at night. Sometimes I'm working on your project at 2AM and you are asleep. My dream is to have a guy in Bali India put solo licks with some instrument I've never heard of, on one of my songs while I'm asleep
